Users constantly tell us that our algorithms suck because stories with low votes overtake stories with higher votes. I will discuss how we rank the stories and attempt to put all these doubts to rest.
Ranking of the stories depends on the following factors
- Number of Votes - Votes make or break a story on IndianPad. A story may never make it to the front page and be lost in the wilderness of our queued stories section if no one votes for it.
- Freshness of the Story - When was the story submitted? Older stories have a tough time beating newer stories. This keeps our front page fresh and the discussion moving with the times.
- Authority of the Source - We calculate importance of the story source based on a variety of factors - Number of previous Votes, Google PageRank, Alexa Rank, etc. This allows us to help stories from sources that are reputed to have good information.
- Any negative feedback - Negative feedback on your story eats away at the rank slowly, very slowly.
- Member Karma - Member with high karma get a grace point for their stories. How we determine karma is subject for another post :)
- Number of comments - A story is considered active and interesting if the comment section of the story is live with activity.
