New Delhi, Aug 14: Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is likely to sue Bishan Singh Bedi for defamation after the former India captain made disparaging comments about his bowling action.
Bedi, a long-time Murali critic, has a history of attacking the Sri Lankan’s exploits.
At the book release function here last Monday, India’s most famous left-arm spinner compared the Sri Lankan to a “shot putter” and went on to say: “Murali will complete 1,000 Test wickets but they count as mere run-outs in my eyes”.
Murali’s agent Kushal Gunasekara told an Indian TV channel Tuesday: “Murali is hurt over Bedi’s remarks. We are working with a team of lawyers. His integrity has been challenged. Restraint in speech is very important.
“Bedi is indulging in character assassination. The remarks are disrespectful and unjustified.”
The lawyers hired by Gunasekara told Sri Lanka’s Daily News: “We are writing a letter to Bedi and, if needed, we will take him to court.”
Sri Lanka Cricket’s secretary Kangadaran Madivanan had also called Bedi’s remarks “defamatory”.
