Fumitaka Yanagisawa of Japan’s Yamagata University displays
‘juhyo’ or ice trees, which have been getting smaller because
of climate change, at Mt. Zao in Yamagata city. Mount Zao is
whipped every year by wet winds from across the Sea of Japan
forming layers of ice and snow that shine like crystals. But
these days the natural phenomenon is growing rarer due to
industrial pollution from China.
