The awards in the key categories started with actress Helen Mirren getting the best actress award for her role in the film The Queen while Forest Whitaker won the best actor for The Last King of Scotland.

The cast and crew of the Oscar-nominated Best Foreign Language Film Water from left to right, John Abraham, Seema Biswas, David Armstrong, Waheeda Rehman, Deepa Mehta, and Lisa Ray arrive for the Oscars. Water lost the Oscar to The Lives of Others.
