A man committed suicide at Belgachia Metro station on Thursday afternoon. He has been identified as Nivas Kumar Pathak (30), a resident of Kumardubi near Dhanbad.

He boarded a Tollygunge-bound train around 11.40 am from Dum Dum and got off at Belgachia. At 12.10 pm, as a Dum Dum bound train was entering Belgachia station, Pathak jumped on the tracks.

“There was nothing the motorman could do. Brakes were slammed but he was run over. After evacuating passengers, the train was reversed to retrieve the body. We had to cancel two trains and a few others were rescheduled,” a senior Metro officer said. Pathak worked in a software firm on Prince Anwar Shah Road and lived in Dum Dum. No motive for the suicide has been uncovered yet.
