With the judgment in the Mahajan case due today, friend says
Pramod’s wife feels such a verdict may shatter the family
Following a nine-month trial, city sessions court judge
Shrihari Davare will pronounce the verdict in the Pramod
Mahajan case today. But as a wife awaiting justice for over a
year, Rekha Mahajan now finds herself in a predicament.
The prosecution has sought death penalty for her brother-in-law Pravin, accused of gunning down Pramod at their Worli residence on April 22, 2006.
But sources close to the family say, Rekha is tense and fears if the court concedes to the prosecution’s demand, the verdict may shatter the family further.
Family ties
A friend of the Mahajan family, who did not wish to be named, told MiD DAY, “Rekha wants Pravin to be punished, but has been worried ever since the prosecution appealed for death penalty. She feels a verdict of that nature will sour family relations further. After all, Pravin is family.”
The friend added that Prabhavati Mahajan, Pramod’s mother, has been very disturbed since the incident and Rekha is worried of her reaction to an extreme verdict. “Rekha is aware that her mother-in-law stands to lose her second son. Moreover, she also feels that other family members may blame her (Rekha) for snatching away the second son,” said the friend.
The friend said that though Poonam, Rahul and other children on her side of the family wish for capital punishment, Rekha has been worried about Pravin’s twins. “She feels an extreme punishment will have an adverse effect on Kapil and Vrushali.
