Pakistani security forces on Wednesday killed 25 militants in the troubled northwestern Swat valley, where the army launched a major operation against the local Taliban after they gunned down three intelligence officials.

The Taliban on Wednesday killed two security personnel and took 25 policemen and paramilitary personnel hostage after storming a police station. The situation in the scenic valley had taken a turn for the worse on Monday after the militants killed three intelligence personnel.

The army information officer at Swat in the North West Frontier Province said curfew was imposed in the region before the troops launched their crackdown on militants early Wednesday morning.
