There are shoot-at-sight orders in the Kandhmal district of Orissa where 20 people have been killed in communal clashes.
The trouble began after the murder of senior VHP leader Swami Lakhsmanada Saraswati. What followed were assaults on churches and Christians across the district including a young woman who was burnt alive.
In Phulbani, which is predominantly Hindu there is a sense of rage and helplessness.
Home Minister of State Sri Prakash Jaiswal’s visit to the area was cancelled at the last minute. Instead he spoke to reporters in the Bhubaneshwar.
“From whatever reports I’ve got the situation is not under control. But the State Government has assured that it will soon improve,” said Sriprakash Jaiswal, MoS for Home.
