Zaheer Khan and Anil Kumble made a comeback in the 16-member One-Day squad for India’s tour of South Africa starting next month.
After a long meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar on Monday announced the team in Mohali keeping in mind the peformances of the current members as well as the players who have made the cut.
Anil Kumble returned to the squad after not being in the One-Day scheme of things for a year. His experience will be a huge boost for Team India, as the bowlers have been lacking the sting to run through the opposition.
Zaheer Khan was a frontrunner for the side and he returned after having performed consistently for Worcestershire taking 70 wickets in the season, and also putting in commendable performances in the domestic season. His inclusion came at the cost of R P Singh, whose performances were lacking the spark recently.
Injuries to Yuvraj Singh and Ajit Agarkar kept them under scanner and their conditions were to be reviewed before the team flies to South Africa. Dinesh Karthik and V R V Singh were kept as standby for the two injured caps.
However, it was confirmed later that Yuvraj Singh was ruled out of the ODI leg of the South African tour, and Dinesh Karthik got the call to replace the prolific batsman.
As expected, the top order slot was the main focus of attention with the inclusion of Wasim Jaffer over the likes of Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa to boost the opening batting, also keeping in mind the injury to Yuvraj could take him longer than expected to heal.
The wicketkeeping department has been kept up for grabs with Dinesh Karthik lurking as a standby, while M S Dhoni’s form hasn’t been all that spactacular of late.
Suresh Raina retained his place in the Squad, while Wasim Jaffer was a surprise inclusion given the fact that he hasn’t played ODIs before. Ramesh Powar however, made way from the side for the senior spinner, whose exclusion from the One-Day side was being questioned ever since he was left out.
