This indeed is a great move, don’t know why, but I feel that this move is going to create a new race for the 14+ karma points like the one that we had for the IPadder of the Year award (I’m not trying to discourage any one from getting 14+ karma points ). I appreciate the fact that IndianPad is trying to attack the spammers face on, but this could have been dealt in a better way.

I remember the line from the movie Spider-man – With great power comes great responsibilities. As this post says “A new user can quickly gain karma”, I am afraid that this power could land in the hands of someone (not targeting any one in particular here ) who could mis-use it. Just my 2 cents…

Edit: This move could also create a platform for stories with the headline “14+ karma users misusing their power”.

I think the top 14++ users have been on Ipad for long.. so dont expect any wrong doing from them..

although there is a case of someone new gaining that karma power using wrong means also…

So IP better have an option to disable admin previledges for users having karma 14+ or don’t enable the admin previldges by default as soon as user gains karma above 14+

Another option might be to enable admin rights to people with 14+ karma and who has been an user for atleast a year (or something similar).

For starters I felt the description of such a big change in IP deserved a better explanation

seem to contradict each other…

—>> Also…what happens if say 30 users reach 14+ karma, will all of the members have the same powers…

—>> Is it justifiable to give powers depending on the activity of the member on the site, For example, If Spencer falls to karma level of 13.89, will we lose the powers. Is that right

So what is the perfect solution…Maybe to Calculate the Seniority, (Minimum 1 Year) (75%) + Activity(25%) = Karma

Please let me know your thoughts…

Or we can have voting system from users having 10+ karma, who can choose admin’s for 3 month period..

Good points there Tolly. I am not sure if I can come up with a formula for now.

Some clarifications –

• Currently, all users with a karma value over 14 get this right automatically. We may go over this ‘automatic grant’ in the future but for now 14 seems a high enough bar.
• Any user who is disabled is double-checked by us so that the final responsibility rests with us. We are doing this to avoid any personal attacks on the power users.
• There may be an argument to give this power based on seniority and not on karma. For e.g. beachbong, avaksi and other senior users do not have karma above 14. We may modify this in the future but the karma number seems a pretty relevant to start this discussion.

We can’t build a fort ina day, this is good start and hopefully we will have proper management system in future..
