Recommended stories tab – This uses your voting history as well as how you rate other users to find stories that may interest you

• User Reputation – If we get into a fight, users will add a negative reputation. This would keep the user history transparent and add some code and ethics even in cases of flame wars.
• Disable Editing of Links once The Story is Posted – Users should disable the story if they find any issue in the story link and repost the story
• Personal Message Notification – Users should get an alert when a new private message is posted. New comers are totally unaware of such awesome features.
• Fully Loaded Sidebars for New Users – Sidebar widgets (Related, Recent Comments etc) should be active by default. New users take some time to get acclimatized to the site so there is a great probability that they skip such handy addons.
• Source Views – It will be nice if we have a feature which displays the number of clicks to the source article. This will minimize rough voting and encourage better voting patterns and defaulters will get some good criticism.
• Linking Sites – I would love to see which website has linked to a particular article. This would help us clear our picture of anonymous voters.
• User Friendly – User Navigation – If i have to check previous posts of any user, i have to through multiple pages. A dropdown when one clicks on a username providing various options like user history, sent posts etc will be handy.
• My Top Posts – Do you have anything in mind? I cant think more at this point. May be a new section in user panel?

How about these:

• Less effort on dupe submissions – When submitting a new link, provide a “Check Dupes” or a “Check similar items” button so that user can see if the article/subject has already been posted by someone else earlier.

• Dupe images – Provide better support for identifying duplicate image submissions

• Stop anonymous voting – Show positive as well as negative voter ids on a story and comments

• High Karma != Mod – Having high karma does not automatically make you a Moderator i.e. Mod status is delinked from karma (at least to some extent)

• Separate category for images only – Image only posts have a separate category

Maybe, something like this … If the user has karma greater than 14 AND he/she has been also rated high by atleast 5 existing Moderators , only then then he/she becomes a Moderator. This way even if someone’s karma goes above 14, he/she would still need some type of approval from existing mods.

Better chat mechanism – The chat will be embedded within the site itself so that its not a stand-alone feature

Something like gmail chat interface would be awesome, ie… you log into IPad and you see list of your friends on the right panel. Then you can double click on their name and chat with them ( maybe in a new window or something ). If the user is offline and you leave message, it goes straight to user’s personal message page.

Devil, i think ability to rate users would solve this out.

• Word Filters – Indianpad should enable word filters especially if we are going to see an integrated chat box.
• Disable Links in Chats – when ever anyone tries to post any link, he should get an message – this action is not allowed. This would help check spamming.

My clarifications below:

1. Today, when I submit a story, I have to type the title and description and submit it – only then can I know if it’s a duplicate. It would save me tons of energy if I could know it earlier.

3. I don’t mean stopping anonymous voring totally – I meant that all user actions be made transparent. So if I vote down your comment, let my action be published with your comment, so you can see who is voting a story up and down (and when)

Thats the whole point, with new features Ipad’s recommended tab whould automatically change to my liking rather than me changing to the liking of masses. ( which right now is fat actresses’s poster – no offense ). I dont care if Aishwariya Rai got a new pimple, but I do care if Russia attacks Georgia.

As per the original post ( as i understand it ) Ipad would provide me a feature to rate users and then automatically use my ratings to generate recommended stories tab.

Which means if I vote high for users like beachbong, drwiz, spencer, devilworkshop and other similar users; then I will see more of their stories on my recommended tab.

On some websites, i have seen that as soon as you enter password which is good ( ie more than 8 characters and all ) the background of the password textfield turns green, which tells user even before submitting that password matches the policy, otherwise the password textfield turns red.

I think we can the same logic here by doing some ajax call while user is writing the headline and description text…

this all looks like it gonna be one hell of a portal to browse… looking forward to it…

Widgets and anonymous users
Better widget support to external websites, change color, size etc to match the external website. Please refer yahoobuzz, their widgets are gorgeous. When anonymous click the widget vote on the external website, redirect him to login/register page, get him to login, drop a cookie and keep him signed in until he decides to clear his private data.

Help
Once a new user registers, take him straight into the help section, In the help page, have a feature where available mods(not compulsory, not always) are logged in to help users(check http://telugustyle.com/help for example), i know chat is being integrated but being there to help and getting the right directions in the first place could make all the difference of an user leaving the site after registering or becoming the next top ipadder

Posting from own website
Discourage users from posting only from their blogs/websites, have a cap on each site, each user. maybe 1 user+ 1 website = 1 story per day. If you saw me from the past, i might have posted everything from my blog, but having a cap will encourage me to post only the best story here. It also encourages other users posting good stuff from others websites, ofcourse, malpractice will prop up, but can be detected. Also some users post almost every headline from major news paper website, that’s just useless, as spencer mentioned. by the time it reaches the front page, its stale.

Mods edit Stories
Burying stories that do not have a good description happens only here, I wonder how many good stories get buried or go unnoticed in that manner, Mods should be given options to edit stories that have been published just 2 hours or 3 hours back. A mark will be left which say the story has been edited, only the description, not the title or the link can be changed by the mods.

Who are the MODS??
Choose mods, about 10 should be a good number, as long as they are active in clearing up spam, disabling users, hosts, changing stories to adult section, guiding users, changing descriptions etc. These users karma should not be connected to posting and publishing but they can still post etc. reward them with something. If they become inactive, or do something unethical, you can always switch off their
powers anytime…Here is my application

• User Reputation – I see user reputation a very important part of the next version of indianpad. Suppose a user has behaved in a bad way with a particular user via comments or similar. We can add a negative reputation to the user’s reputation index. All Users will be aware of his negative reputation and the concerned user will have no place to hide. He will feel conscious of his bad reputation on Indianpad. He will improve his ethics while on Indianpad in a hope that users will add to a better reputation.

We can have stars (or anything better that indianpad can fine tune) alongside usernames in comments and user profile page which would show user reputation.

One user can give a reputation a particular user once. He can change the reputation index depending on user’s change-in-behavior. Well, we need more inputs in order to make this more fruitful as far as user behavior and ethics is concerned.

• Linking Sites – Linking sites is an option which i would love to see on the stories.

In this section, sites that have linked to this articles would be shown. This would help us clear the picture of the anonymous voters. Also, this would increase backlinks to Indianpad (although Indianpad doesn’t require them) hence more traffic. We can also have voting measures as in alternate links to filter bad linking sites.

Let me know if you need any more explanation i will gladly make a more diagrammatic explanation.
