Your point is valid, though i think if there are stories which are good like this there is no harm in letting user comment under it.

Indianpad does not have recommend feature and we all know stories with comments get some kind of attention, maybe if a user starts commenting under each of his stories and they are not worth it, we can classify that as spam.

I don’t think u can make rules tolly, just cause u have 14+ karma, not unless indianpad specify that this is a wrong practice.

Well how difficult its for IP to stop users from being the first one to comment under their own story, so that’s a practical solution.. not the one u suggested where you decide who is right and who is wrong… i disagree

Again, lots of good stories gets missed unless someone comments under them.. so either we have some recommend feature or let users comment under good posts they create..

That is what you don’t understand…this is not about you…if we agree on one thing here, I will also start commenting on my stories…but I only want a clear guideline for all to follow, so in the future fingers are not pointed and the rule is same for all Indianpad users..

Voting or not voting is your choice like you said, I am trying to address the issue of poster commenting on own story to seek attention

I understand Tolly. But why would a user want to do that to gain attention?

I know some users do that all the time. I sometimes do visit the story but most of the time, I don’t vote (based on the description itself). For such stories, I rarely end up visiting the original link anyway.

If you ask me to make a choice, I’d say let a user comment on his own story, as long as it’s not comment #1.

Here’s my suggestion …

• Why do people comment on their own stories ?
• So that it shows up on all pages on the right column ( see image )
• So, why not make a general rule for everyone that any comment on our own story doesn’t show on recent-comments section
  • Or have only show comments which have more than 1+ votes on it
• This way even if someone put 10 comments on his own story, it wont scam the system for promoting it to first page
• Its still democratic enough, as you can comment – if you think you have something to add to your own story.
  • Eg… during Delhi Blast, i probably commented on my own story adding new information coming over the news and keeping it up2date.
  • Same could be reason for adding comment to Final Match between India Australia where you want to update other viewers with scores etc….
  • However, the system wont let you scam the right-column and show only your comments ( if you submit 10 comments in few minutes )

@amiable_indian – that was my comment on my own story and it was as a response to avaksi’s comment. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. Avaksi liked the story, he commented. I liked his comment and I felt like responding.

btw why don’t we just remove the Recent Comments feature from the homepage? We already have a link on the top to see all the comments. I really don’t think this is necessary but if you think that it’s not right to comment on your own story then i think this will be a great step.

No I think users shouldn’t promote their stories through comments, unless its a news article they want to add their own say so upon. Also everyone finds their submission legit, that is the reason they submit it right. Just look at Pushpinder, he finds everything he submits legit and promotes it in anyway possible, and I don’t blame him, he got this I-Pad thing right down in their and is real effective here. And if that happens, IndianPad will have one too many comments. Similar to Rambhai, rambhai’s comment area is more like Twitter of what stories which user is reading. So I think no one should comment on their own stories, but should messege to other users regarding the story and they should comment upon the story they vote because it gets them karma if the story happens to make it to the front page.

And Tollywood, I love your submissions and everything but you just make some real stupid bummers here and there. Why should anyone have the right to take off my story? IndianPad doesn’t make me sign anything saying I can’t promote a story on IndianPad, which is actually helping IndianPad and is the point of IndianPad. And it is a FREE WORLD you can’t just peel off the things you consider to be wrong. Its a DUMB DUMB world.

I’d say a big NO to self promotion. But I guess its ok if the story is really worth getting some attention.

I absolutly agree. No system is foolproof. The best things in life are not always the most popular. An excellent example in our constitution, which gives everyone one equal vote – but look at what we elect every time.
