If so, indulge me and try the following exercise:

1] Frame an argument, or even your position on the subject, that states why Kashmir should remain part of India.

2] Then replace the word ‘India’ with ‘the British empire’, and ‘Kashmir’ with ‘India’.

I suspect that your sentiments will then appear rather similar to those expressed by Winston Churchill when he opposed India’s independence. The principle that our freedom fighters fought for then was that Indians alone should be in charge of India’s fate, and not the British; it could similarly be argued today that Kashmiris alone should be in charge of Kashmir’s fate, and not other Indians. Anything else is imperialism.

Wow like, if every state in India start think themselves as India and India as the British empire we can have 28 countries or may be 35 Countries.(taking UT’s in consideration) Wow wouldn’t that be great for Cricket like only 8 countries play it seriously but that number can go upto 30 or maybe more.

Wow… What a thought-provoking article!!!

Thoughtful, for sure. Kashmiris have all the right to choose their nationality – and they did so a long long time back. The issue today is external interference. Extremists from across the border are doing in Kashmir exactly what the British did to control India – divide and rule. I would fully support this argument if all the protests were happening without external interference.

Unfortunately, it is too easy to divide people in the name of religion given the current circumstances in Kashmir, and that is being fully exploited by extremists. Kashmiris may feel good about this in the short term, but what are they asking for in the long term? An unstable country, a divided political scene which barely manages to convince the world that it controls the army and intelligence agencies. An almost failed state. All that and much more versus a prosperous economy, and a truly secular, multicultural democracy. Unfortunately they are being led to believe that that is not a good future for them. Also, had this been any other major world power (in place of India), the separatists would not have had the chance to say a word and those who tried to would have had their ass kicked.
