The private sector in India is a bunch of jokers. I have been telling this for a long time and it got confirmed once again. Yesterday (Sunday), myself and my friend decided to spend the afternoon drinking some beer as Chennai was freakin’ hot. I was in my usual shorts and t-shirt with shoes and my friend was in full pants and a t-shirt. We first drove inside GRT Radisson on the way to airport. When we entered the bar and one guy came and told us that we are not allowed inside because I was wearing a shorts and not full pants. I was about to make a big issue of it but my friend didn’t want to be part of it. So I kept quiet and came out. We then drove next door to Trident Hilton. We were told the same. I have to keep quiet because my friend didn’t want to fight over the issue. I then decided that I will blog about this crap by GRT Radisson and Trident Hilton. I have been to much bigger hotels in USA and I never encountered such a problem. Here are my questions to these two businesses

  • What is the problem if I go and drink booze in shorts? If it is an issue of underage drinking (??!!), they can ask for ID. I would have provided ids from both India and USA. Is it a cultural issue? What kinda crap it is?
  • What do these people expect? They expect people to come to bar in full suit in this freakingly hot Chennai weather? Wearing a shorts and t-shirt itself is too much for the weather.
  • This doesn’t make any business sense either. Because of this, we saved a few thousand rupees by going to a bar in a local restaurant. Why would any business lose money (however little it may be from their point of view) over whether I have shorts or not? Such comedians confirm my theory that Indian private sector is full of jokers. I wonder what can we call those fools who suck up to our private sector. What kinda education they got which taught them to suck upto our private sector blindly?

If not for my friend, I would have definitely raised this issue there itself. I am going to take this issue to Radisson group and Hilton group after I return to US. I don’t care whether they will take any action (for that matter whether they can take any action) or not, I am definitely going to take up this issue with their corporate offices. This is plain discrimination and human rights violation.

what happens if you wear lungi and goto those 2 restaurants ?? Will they still deny you entry. I guess from a legal standpoint they have the right to deny you service as its a private establishment. I also wonder what would they do if a gora guy went in with shorts. If they did allow him, then its discrimination. Double standards are in every part of life in India, I hope you try going in a lungi and video tape the whole denial process. Should make very good viewing on youtube :-)
