France’s Compagnie Generale des Etablissements Michelin Monday
said it will invest 40 billion rupees ($868 million) to set up
a new factory in India’s southern Chennai city. The company
expects the factory, which will make radial tires for trucks
and buses in India and employ 1,500 people, to start production
in 2012. On Monday, Michelin signed a pact with the state
government of Tamil Nadu to set up the 290-acre plant 50
kilometers (31 miles) north of Chennai, the capital of the
province.

“We believe that India holds tremendous potential for the
Michelin group in terms of establishing a world class
manufacturing facility,” said Prashant Prabhu, president,
Michelin Africa-India-Middle East.

The rise in demand for automobiles has prompted several Indian
and foreign tire makers to invest in the country. These
companies are betting not only on the increasing demand in the
local market but also want to use the low-cost manufacturing
base in India for exporting tires.

Listing bankrupt companies – 2009: Ever since the recession hit
US and the economy started to tumble, a lot of popular
companies have filed for bankrupt. Some survived while others
did not. Many popular companies hit the front page when they
decided to file for bankruptcy such as General Motors, Chrysler
and Circuit City. Also, rumors start flying every now and then
regarding companies that might or might not file for
bankruptcy. For example, there were rumors going about
Blockbuster’s bankruptcy and now people are asking “is Sears
going bankrupt?”. Other popular questions have been: “why did
enron go bankrupt” and “when will medicare go bankrupt“.

Paying 50 paise to Re 1 per SMS,
depending on your package? Well, the cost to your mobile
service provider of delivering your message to another mobile
network is less than 1 paisa. That’s because an average
SMS consists of 1KB data, which takes
a fraction of a second for transportation and termination. This
revelation not only belies claims that India has among the
lowest telecom tariffs in the world, it could also set the
stage for SMS rates to fall sharply.
Voice calls are already being offered at 1 paisa per second. As
new entrants flood into the market, SMS tariffs could become the next major frontier
of the pricing war now raging in the Indian mobile services
industry.

SMS and other value-added services
form 10% of the Indian telecom industry’s annual Rs 1 lakh
crore-plus revenues. The current regime followed by telecom
operators is `bill and keep’. This means your operator keeps
the entire amount that he bills you for the SMS and pays nothing to the network on which the
SMS is sent. This is for two reasons.
First, the proportion of traffic across networks is roughly
equal, and second, the cost of termination is negligible.

Trai has so far refused to regulate SMS tariffs along with some other tariffs under
what is known as forbearance. Forbearance is usually adopted by
regulators when they believe that competitive markets are
working and tariffs reflect true costs. As it turns out, the
true cost of sending an SMS would
never have come to light if new entrants had not been forced to
sign interconnection agreements with existing operators at a
price that is far higher than the actual cost.

Contrary to popular belief, tax expenses of companies with the
infrastructure status have gone up by 90.3 percent, a survey
released here Sunday said.

According to the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s
(Assocham) Financial Pulse study, tax expenses for companies
under the infrastructure status have gone up because of
improved realisations.

This has contributed to better margins and improved bottomlines
of such companies, thereby increasing their tax liabilities.

All tough situations tend to teach us something. I believe that
we can always learn from bad situations in order to avoid them
in future or to be better prepared for them. This recession
that has been going on for a while now has raised several
issues that need to be answered. Also, it has reminded us that
we need to be financially prepared.

I have noticed that ever since our economy went into recession,
people have been finding ways to monitor their finances more
than ever before. In these times when sources of income are
scarce, one needs to be really careful about how much he

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel on Sturday said that the
government would not bailout private airlines. Private airlines
ganged up and decided to suspend operations on August 18 if the
government did not help them cut costs. Patel advised the
private carriers to withdraw their strike call on August 18. He
stated, “Passengers interest would be safeguarded and
DGCA would take action if needed.”

Air India will increase the number of flights to reduce
inconvenience to passengers, Mr Patel said. It is not known if
Paramount Airways will join its private sector peers in the
strike.

was an issue even before the private carriers started
operations. Painting a desperate picture of their situation,
industry lobby body Federation of Indian Airlines (<span class=

lowering taxes on jet fuel and bringing down airport charges,
their survival is in doubt.

Employees of state-run banks have decided to go ahead with
their proposed strike on Thursday and Friday following failure
of talks with the government over hike in wages and other
demands. “Our talks were inconclusive. We are meeting again on
Tuesday. But as of now we are going ahead with the strike based
on the notice we served July 21,” said N S Virk, vice president
All India Bank Officers’ Association (AIBOA).

The strike notice has been served by the United Forum of Bank
Unions (UFBU) — an umbrella
organisation representing nine unions of officers and other
staff in the banking industry, of which Virk’s union is also a
member. The government had asked the unions, which claim
membership of over a million staff, to hold talks with the
Indian Bank Association (IBA), which
is a representative body of bank managements, as also with the
chief labour commissioner.

The main demands are wage increase, a better social security
net and a proper policy for giving jobs to the family members
of deceased or disabled employees on compassionate grounds.
