On April 1, 2005, Google announced a drink called <a href=

No, Google was not getting into the food business and this Gulp

Adapting to globalisation when it comes to their eating habits,
Indians, however, still would look for the colour of food
believing firmly that if the colour is attractive the food
should be good, say experts.

“Indians first go with the colour of the food and have a
tendency to believe that if the colour is good then the taste
would automatically be great,” says master Chef Irshad Ahmed
Qureshi of Inter-Continental.

“I have been to China, Japan, Malaysia, England and the Middle
East where chefs give priority to presentation of dishes and
colour doesn’t matter for them. But in India, especially for
seasoned Indian dishes, colour with the use of different spices
does matter to make it look more attractive,” he adds.

Getting rolls of sushi to come out right can be a pretty tricky
process. Chances are your guests are already vastly impressed
that you’re even going to try to <a href=

see those faces fall. Well, here’s a tip for the both of us —
get yourself one of these automatic sushi rollers from Namco.
Just load it up with all the ingredients, turn the handles, and
then hide it so no one knows <a href=

A Tennessee man confessed to using his computer to counterfeit
$100 bills to pay strippers at a club in Nashville, it was
reported Sunday.

Damon Armagost, of Smryna, pleaded guilty Friday to
printing $1,400 in counterfeit bills from the image of $100
bill he downloaded on his computer, The (Nashville)

Armagost spent $600 in counterfeit money in April on
strippers who became suspicious and called police, who
recognized the counterfeit bills as all having the same
number as fake money passed elsewhere in the country, the
newspaper reported.

“Secret Service agents went to Armagost’s home in Smyrna to
interview him, and a family member informed the agents that

Denied higher access to dal (lentil) supplies from India, which
wants to stabilise its domestic markets, Bangladesh has turned
to Nepal in the last one year, giving the latter a big boost in
bilateral trade.

Lentil has now become the second-biggest commodity of export
from Nepal to Bangladesh.

However, for Bangladesh, that imported 4,800 tonnes of lentil
valued at $2.5 million during June 2006-July 2007, imports from
Nepal have proved costlier due to additional transport costs,
New Age newspaper said Sunday.

Since Bangladesh does not have a road transit arrangement with
India, its trucks cannot ply to Nepal. Indian trucks load the
goods from Nepal and transport it to the India-Bangladesh
border.

Such hassles involve extra cost and time as well as cause
damage to goods for want of adequate warehouse, traders told

Caryl Schivley says her son, Brenton, was always very careful
about what he ate — until last September 1, when he was at a
friend’s house and took a cookie from a bowl on the kitchen
table.

“He took a bite of the cookie and he said to his friend, ‘I
shouldn’t have eaten that,’” said his mother. Severely allergic
to peanuts, the 16-year-old from western Massachusetts made the
dire mistake of not asking about the ingredients. Within
minutes he developed a severe allergic reaction to the cookie,
which contained peanuts.

Within an hour, he was dead.

Feeding 10,000 people every single day for free - Gurdwara Bangla Sahib Langar

Free-for-all is a term generally used to describe chaos. And
chaos is a word one could use to describe much of Delhi. But at
the Gurdwara Bangla Sahib kitchen, a Sikh temple which serves
meals to around 10,000 people every single day, there’s not a
trace of chaos. And the food is free. For all.

The Gurwara Bangla Sahib langara has been feeding Delhi
residents since 1935. Day in and day out a factory of human
hands churns out what one member of our group observed as a
day’s peace of mind for hungry members of the community. “If
you get your day’s meal,” he said, “you can relax. You can
survive.” It’s not a matter of survival for everyone who eats
there — in fact, most people with whom we shared lunch looked
happy and healthy, and had probably come as members of the
spiritual community. But it’s there for anyone who needs it,
and in a city of 13 million (and rapidly growing), an open,
organized, clean, reliable, and free food source couldn’t be
more valuable.

Every Sikh temple throughout the world has a Langar (Punjabi
for “free kitchen”). This is not a soup kitchen. It’s not
exclusively for the poor, nor exclusively for the Sikh
community. Volunteering in the cooking, serving and cleaning
process is a form of active spiritual practice for devotees,
but the service they provide asks no religious affiliation of
its recipients. Our guide’s chorus was, “Man, woman, color,
caste, community,” meaning you will be fed here regardless of
how you fit into any of those classifications. This spirit of
inclusion and equality is reinforced by the kitchen’s adherence
to vegetarianism, not because Sikhs are vegetarian, but because
others who visit may be, and by serving no meat, they exclude
nobody.

The preparations take place in an open air building with stone
floors which has been arranged with several preparation
stations. In one area, men and women sit together around a huge
rectangular platform covered in dough. They roll balls, flatten
them into circles, and pile them up to pass over to the griddle
built into the floor, where only men sit around with long
flippers, turning the white slabs of dough over and over until
they acquire dark brown speckles, at which point they flick
them off the heat and onto a cloth.

To stir the vegetables in the wok they use a shovel — the kind
you’d used to dig a hole or shovel snow; the ladle for the
lentil pot probably has a one-quart capacity; and the wash
basins look more like bathing tubs at an ancient bathhouse than
dish sinks, with high cement walls around a long, shallow pool.
A row of volunteers sits on the ground near the washing area
cleaning off metal plates by hand and passing them to the
basins for rinsing. Stacked plates pile up along one side,
ready for the next seating of eaters.

There is a certain joy about visiting places that you
called home at some point in your life. You are part
excited, part nervous as your senses try and seek out the
old and the familiar. You wonder if all those nooks,
corners, sights, sounds and smells still linger? You dread
that the years of carefully cultivated romance around a

Durian is a fruit native to Thailand. They general grow to be
about the size of your average melon. They have a light green
layer that is hard like that of a coconut. It has sharp spikes
on the outside as well. When you cut the fruit open you can see
its sectioned yellow flesh. The odor of this fruit is pungent,
some people describe the odor to be like the smell or stinky
feet, rotting flesh, or a high concentration of walnuts. The
smell is so offensive that it is illegal to be eaten in many
public areas all around Asia and there are signs to let you
know! #
The world is buying more and more food all the time. One
hundred years ago it was being cooked by the family over the

Here are 6 of the strangest canned foods you can find being
distributed at your local supermarket. I left out food meant
for animals as that is completely different.

People across South Asia are struggling to cope with a sudden
severe shortage of affordable wheat and rice. There have been
queues outside Pakistani shops in towns around the country, and
flour prices have shot up. Wheat flour is a staple foodstuff in
Pakistan, where rotis or unleavened bread are eaten with almost
every meal. Last week Afghanistan appealed for foreign help to
combat a wheat shortage while Bangladesh recently warned it
faced a crisis over rice supplies. Global wheat prices are at
record highs. Problems have been compounded by crop failures in
the northern hemisphere and an increase in demand from
developing countries.

Afghan Commerce Minister Mohammad Amin Farhang said wheat
shortages could lead to serious problems during the winter. His
call came amid rising discontent inside Afghanistan at the
spiralling cost of wheat and other basic foods. Afghanistan
does not grow enough wheat to feed all its people and is
partially dependent on imports.

On Thursday, the chief of the Bangladesh army, Gen Moeen U
Ahmed, said that he was “very concerned” about the problem of
rice supplies which he said must be redressed immediately. Many
people in the country have been hit hard by spiralling food
prices, which in some cases have doubled over the last year,
mostly because of damage caused by heavy monsoon rain. A
delegation from Bangladesh is now in India to discuss importing
rice to offset the shortages.

Indian food gets even more popular in Britain

Indian food has become too popular in the United Kingdom over
the past decade and a large number of Britons now prefer to eat
out at Asian restaurants, according to a study. Sales of not
only Indian but also other Asian dishes like Chinese and Thai
have increased 36 per cent between 2001 and 2006 — overall the
fast food industry has increased its sales by 73 per cent
between 1995 and 2005, the study says.

“Food is now a key part of our leisure time and we are eating
out more often. It is no longer unfashionable to cook but this
trend can be at odds with desires for convenience or intentions
to make ethical or healthy choices. The popularity of
convenience food snacking and eating out has led to concerns
about the demise of the family meal as well as a decline in
knowledge and skills about food (but) the majority of family
meals are still eaten together. Even in single person
households, eating remains a social activity with young single
people tending to invite people to dinner more often than their
married counterparts,” The Guardian quoted the government study
of British eating habits as saying.

However, it has played down reports that Britain is not only
becoming a nation of scoffers but getting dangerously dependent
on food from abroad.

When I used to live in Empress Court, opposite the Oval,
near Churchgate, I would rise at dawn, as the clock on
Rajabai Tower struck Six, and go for a long brisk walk all
the way to Chowpatty, and on my return, I would head for
Stadium restaurant for a refreshing and stimulating cup of
tea to energize me and perk me up for the day ahead.

Despite previous studies that have concluded otherwise, new
research suggests that the addition of milk to tea doesn’t
affect the antioxidant properties of the brew; yet experts say
the issue will remain murky until more investigation is
completed. This one is atleast reassuring to me.

We’re not sure what kind of person (or family) needs to keep a
stock of 20 apples, oranges, and what could be limes in their
home, but this Ring design seems to satisfy your crazy craving
for produce. Fresh fruit goes in at the top, and less fresh
fruit comes out the bottom. A cool design, but unless you plan
on becoming a full-fledged fruitarian like Steve Jobs was, you
probably want to stick with the less demanding fruit holders. –
