Photography is constantly reminding us how wondrous and
beautiful the world we live in truly is. It often urges us to
take another look at the ordinary things around us in a new
light, revealing a quiet beauty in even the most mundane of
objects. More specifically, smoke photography,
with its alluring images of ghostly wisps of smoke, shows us
that we don’t have to look very far to find this beauty.

In this edition of our Monday Inspiration series, we present
60 examples of beautiful smoke photography and smoke
art: a round-up of some of the best examples of photos
and artworks where smoke dominates. At the bottom of this post
are some links to tutorials on creating your own smoke
photographs, as well as other resources on the subject.

The cult of virginity (November 1-15, 1978)

Majority of college girls in four major metropolitan cities
have never kissed a man on the lips. They firmly believe that
premarital sex “is wrong” and that “most boys want to marry a
virgin”. Only a tiny minority learned how babies were born
before they were 14 and even today, most of them do not know
what VD stands for.

On the whole, an average college girl is conservative,
conventional and cautious in all matters relating to sex, and
espouses views similar to her mother’s. The boys are no
different— their fringe liberalism being more than compensated
for by a distressing combination of intolerance and ignorance.

Those were the major findings of a survey conducted by the
Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB).
IMRB’s researchers interviewed 604 college students and the
interviews were kept as informal as possible and three broad
questions were asked: those dealing with the awareness of VD,
and birth control; attitudes towards virginity, divorce, and
homosexuality, and actual experience of kissing, petting, or
intercourse.

<a href=

Unending nightmare (September 16-30, 1978)

Breaking all barriers and records of nearly a century, the
rivers of north India conspired with the monsoon to erode signs
of civilisation. Sweeping through the state of Haryana,
sections of the capital Delhi, and through the landscape of
Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, the fury of flood spelt
death, destruction and disease. Capital’s sprawling
resettlement colony Jehangirpuri presents a dismal scene.

The tarred road to the settlement peters out into a mussy pond;
the crumbling tops of a few houses could be sighted some metres
away; and a placid sheet of gently rippling water had virtually
erased whatever remained of the eyesore created by contemporary
urban planning.

In less than two days, nearly all of the 1,30,000-strong
population of Jehangirpuri had been evacuated. The few who
remained marooned slept on the rapidly disintegrating rooftops
to guard their belongings.

Google would have taken a sigh of relief. United States is now
the second largest Orkut Using Country which just jumped ahead

I am sure these are growing signs since orkutting in India
seems to be catching up more and more amongst youths. So i do
not see if there were Indian drop-outs from Orkut rather a
positive sign that more Amerians are looking towards orkut.

Back in 1995, Time magazine published a cover story called ‘On
A Screen Near You’. It highlighted the results of an 18-month
Carnegie Mellon University study (with the dated title
‘Marketing Pornography on the Information Superhighway’) that
looked at how much porn there was on the Net. And as
demonstrated by the magazine’s cover image of a shocked little
boy in front of a computer, the Internet was overrun with porn
and perverts, and the kids weren’t safe any more.

But it was the nature of the article itself that was
interesting. It focused on bulletin board systems and
newsgroups, dial-up modems, and terms like ‘Information
Superhighway’, ‘cyberporn’, and ‘phone bill’. Times have
changed. But even in 1995, the Internet — as opposed to the Web
— had seen a couple of decades of development. And it’s now had
over a decade more. It’s given us hundreds and hundreds of
milestones; thousands of defining moments.

We decided to plough the history of the entire Internet, from
the roots of its underlying technology, to the Web properties
that helped it explode, the litigation it endured on the way
and disasters companies have suffered as a result of the Net’s
popularity. We’ve picked 50 of what we think are the most
significant moments, in ten categories spanning almost 40 years
of Internet history:

Paper presented to the National Academy of Science, at its
annual meeting, April 29, 2002, Washington, D.C.

To the targets of terrorism, the perpetrators may often appear
as the incarnation of evil deserving the utmost punishment.
However, labeling terrorism as evil, though cathartically
gratifying from the victims’ perspective, and perhaps an
effective rallying cry in the “war on terrorism”, may not
suffice to counter the phenomenon. To do so effectively we need
to understand terrorism, identify its roots, its strengths and
its vulnerabilities. Different social sciences may offer varied
insights into the ways terrorism “ticks”. Today, I would like
to offer a psychological perspective, and attempt a glimpse
into the terrorist mind.

Pathology? What does it feel like to be a terrorist? It
certainly isn’t a life on the “easy street”. Rather, it is life
“on the edge”, rife with violence against others and a near
certainty of a meeting a violent death oneself (that turns into
full certainty in the case of suicide terrorism ). What kind of
person would want this for her or himself ? A crazy person,
perhaps ? In the seventies and the eighties— this possibility
was entertained quite seriously by psychologists and
psychiatrists. Extensive research conducted on the Baader
Meinhof Group, the Italian Red Army Brigades, the Basque
ETA, and the various Palestinian
organizations, among others, came out empty, however.

The game, called C-Shock (available online at

Maniar told The Telegraph yesterday: “I have drawn from my own

The computer game has a separate set of questions for men and

Does Facebook have an answer for MySpace Music?

With the launch of the much-anticipated MySpace Music expected
within the week, tech industry wags are already asking if
MySpace’s archrival Facebook has its own “social music”
strategy.

Now Facebook, despite bouts of indecision, may be leaning
toward a plan: The social music service iLike announced Monday
that Radio Retaliation, the forthcoming album from electronica
duo Thievery Corporation will make its exclusive debut Thursday
on its site. (It probably wasn’t a coincidence that Thievery
Corporation was the headlining musical act at Facebook’s F8
conference in July.)

iLike became a runaway success on Facebook’s platform and was
selected as one of the social network’s preferred “Great Apps”
at F8. The music site has debuted albums before, most notably
R.E.M.‘s Accelerate in February, but this one will be
officially promoted by Facebook in a “listening party” that
lasts until the album’s wide-release debut on September 23.

The name Kaaba means “cube,” but the structure isn’t a cube: it
measures 12m long, 10m wide, and 15m high (33 feet x 50 feet x
45 feet). The Kaaba is built from grey granite and each corner
points to one of the four points of the compass. The single
Entrance is on the northeast, side, 2.3m above the ground. The
interior of the Kaaba is bare except for three supporting
wooden pillars and gold hanging lamps. Affixed to the eastern
corner of the Kaaba, about 1.5m up, is the Black Stone of
Mecca.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is
the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator
complex, intended to collide opposing beams of protons charged
with very high energy. Its main purpose is to explore the
validity and limitations of the Standard Model, the current
theoretical picture for particle physics. It is theorized that
the collider will confirm the existence of the Higgs boson, the
observation of which could confirm the predictions and missing
links in the Standard Model, and could explain how other
elementary particles acquire properties such as mass…

It’s a research which will keep your spirits up—alcohol helps
people remember the good times and forget the bad.

Researchers have found that people who drink are more likely to
remember the good things and least likely to recall the bad
things, say, the worst experiences of being drunk in a party as
alcohol affects memory in a selective manner.

“The discovery that alcohol helps us remember the good and
brush aside the bad could explain our fascination with alcohol.
This bias towards positive memories means that people are more
likely to drink heavily the next time they go out because they
only remember the good memories about the last time,” said lead
researcher Theodora Duka.

Duka of Sussex University and colleagues at Liverpool
University came to the conclusion after looking at a group of
volunteers who were recruited for the study, the British media
reported.

The researchers looked at how well people recalled flash cards
shown just before and just after drinking several units of
alcohol. Their answers were compared with those from a similar
group given alcohol-free drinks.

In fact, both the drinkers and non-drinkers remembered the
first set of cards better than the second. However, the
drinkers remembered the first set of cards better than the
non-drinkers and recalled emotive images particularly vividly.
But they scored worse than the non-drinkers when asked to
remember the second set of cards, with emotional scenes proving
especially easy to forget.

Tyler Durden: “We’re consumers. We are by-products of a
lifestyle obsession. Murder, crime, poverty, these things don’t
concern me. What concerns me are celebrity magazines,
television with 500 channels, some guy’s name on my underwear.
Rogaine, Viagra, Olestra.”

Narrator: “Martha Stewart. ”

Tyler Durden: “F*ck Martha Stewart. Martha’s polishing the
brass on the Titanic. It’s all going down, man. So f*ck off
with your sofa units and Strinne green stripe patterns. ”

The movie fight club is filled with memorable quotes like this
one…But embedded in the movie are also some great lessons that
can be applied to everyday life.

(Amsterdam-Osdorp, Netherlands)
A zoning law and blueprint flub were the inspiration for this
apartment complex. Dutch housing regulations require apartment
construction to provide a certain amount of daylight to their
tenants–but MVRDV architects forgot
to plan for that. Their solution? To hang thirteen of the 100
units off the north facade of the block. The ingenious design
saves ground floor space and allows enough sunlight to enter
the east or west facade.
