Bawa sets new price record at global online auction

Saffronart, the Mumbai-based online auction house for fine art and jewellery, set a global price record for Manjit Bawa’s untitled canvas at Rs. 1.7 crore against an estimated price of Rs.90 lakh at its online global winter sale, a statement issued by the online auction house said Monday.

The auction house sold 78 percent of the lots on display raking in Rs.20 crore (US $ 4.3 million).

The fifth edition of the five-day Jaipur Literature Festival, beginning Jan 21, will host authors like Vikram Chandra, Tina Brown, Hanif Kureishi and Mahasweta Devi.

The festival, to be held at the Diggy Palace in the heart of Jaipur city, will offer a mix of literature, theatre, music and films – along with panel discussions and readings by renowned authors from across the world, a statement issued by the Jaipur Virasat Foundation, which puts together the festival, said Friday.

Recently, a film festival was held for school students. According to Education Minister MA Baby who commented on the issue, the government is thinking about holding a fest for University level students too. This was when he spoke at the valedictory function of the second Kerala State Children’s Educational Film Festival 2009 in Kollom. Some of the other people present at the event, like C Divakaran, the Minister for Civil Supplies, felt that students should deal with starvation as a topic and actor Madhu felt that the cinema technicians should be given appointments as cinema teachers in schools.
