Reconstruction of the 27-year-old Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will
miss the Dec 31 deadline and the venue for the opening and
closing ceremonies of the 2010 Commonwealth Games would need
three more months to get ready because a newly proposed tunnel
has to be built.

The 150-metre-long tunnel, which will open up at the centre,
has been designed to connect the two ends of the stadium. The
tunnel will be used by the performers to enter the ground

The doyen of Indian athletics, PT Usha being denied adequate

Rio De Janeiro will host 2016 Olympics, the International
Olympic Committe announced, bringing the Olympic Games to South
America for the first time and besting a Chicago bid that was
strongly backed by President Obama. Rio won in the third round,
after Chicago was eliminated in the first round and Tokyo,
earlier considered the weakest candidate, was eliminated in the
second round.

Two hours after Mr. Obama brought his star power to Copenhagen
Friday morning, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil
pleaded with the IOC to embark on new
territory and bring South America into the Olympic fold after
more than a century of holding the Games in Europe, North
America, Asia and Australia. The Olympics have never taken
place in Africa. There have been 30 Olympic Games in Europe, 12
in North America, five in Asia and two in Australia.

After IOC President Dr. Jacques Rogge
announced Rio as the winner, the leaders of the bid erupted in
screams hugging President Da Silva who waited throughout the
afternoon for the results of the vote. The celebration for Rio
broke out even before the final outcome was announced, since it
was deemed unlikely that the IOC
would choose Madrid, the other finalist, and hold the Olympics
in Europe three consecutive times. The 2012 Summer Games will
occur in London, and the 2014 Winter Games will take place in
Sochi, Russia. The 2010 Winter Games will take place in
Vancouver.

Chicago’s early exit was a shock, as President Obama lent the
full force of the White House to the effort and flew to
Copenhagen overnight to deliver a seven-minute speech to the
International Olympic Committee Friday morning. In addition,
Michelle Obama spent much of this week in Copenhagen personally
lobbying IOC members.

The Honda Formula One team said it was optimistic about its
chances of competing in the 2009 World Championship after Nick
Fry, the company’s CEO, confirmed
three prospective buyers had expressed an interest in taking
control of the team.

Affected by the credit crisis, collapsing global auto markets
and an army of angry shareholders, Takeo Fukui, the chief
executive of Honda Motors, this morning confirmed the team
would withdraw from the sport unless a new buyer could be found
before the end of the month.

However, despite the bleak outlook, Fry says the team could be
on the grid when the new season gets underway in Australia on

Some might say that professional and extreme bodybuilding is
all about pushing the body to its limits, in search of that
“perfect image” that tends to vary from person to person.
Others might claim that it’s an addiction that can’t be helped,
a habit that must be continuously fuelled and supported. But
whatever a person’s reason for pushing the limits, most will
agree that steroids, specifically anabolic steroids, tend to do
more harm than good, especially when the side-effects are
brought to attention.

World Champion Viswanathan Anand on Sunday advocated a
step-by-step approach for the inclusion of chess in the Olympic
Games and said India had the talent to win medals, whenever it

“The first thing is that chess should get into the Olympic
umbrella as a demonstration sport in four years times and then
as a medal sport in eight years,” he said.

“The main thing is to be there in the Olympic Games. I am open
to play in Olympics in any format of the game. Indians will
have more opportunity of winning medals,” Anand, who himself
played a demonstration game
The Pirates have signed two pitchers from India as non-drafted

Kumar Patel, 19, were the top contenders to emerge from the
first 30,000 entrants in the “Million Dollar Arm” contest in
India. The winners threw the most pitches 85 miles per hour or
faster for strikes. They are the first Indian-born players to
sign a professional sports contract outside of the country,
according to the Pirates.

“The Pirates are committed to creatively adding talent to our

Ensuring security at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi is up to
Russian organisers, the International Olympic Committee
(IOC) said on Thursday amid concerns
from the Games hosts’ Georgian neighbours.

Earlier this week Georgia had asked the IOC for the 2014 Games to be moved from Russia’s
Sochi for security reasons following a brief war between the
two countries.

Sochi, a popular Russian Black Sea resort, lies only about 50
kilometres from the Georgian border.

“Security is a top priority for the IOC and organisers at every Olympic Games,”
IOC spokeswoman Emmanuelle Moreau
said.

“Security arrangements fall under the responsibility of the
local authorities of the host cities which ensure that
everything that is humanly possible is done to protect the
athletes, the spectators and all people involved in the staging
of the Games,” she said.

India’s Jeev Milkha Singh won a nail-biting Singapore Open on
Sunday after Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els missed putts to
take the $5 million event to a play-off.

Singh, who virtually sealed the Asian order of merit title with
the win, started the day five shots behind leader Chapchai
Nirat of Thailand but three birdies on the front nine helped
him to the top of the leaderboard at seven-under par.

Three-time major winner Harrington looked certain to force a
play-off after a stunning fairway wood gave him the chance of
birdie at the last, but the Irishman’s five-foot putt leaked
across the face of the hole.

“I couldn’t have asked for better,” the 36-year-old Singh said
in a television interview. “I’m a very fortunate man to win.
The golfing gods were on my side.”

Egged on by their parents, our child footballers crave
Premiership success at any cost, but are England’s future
Rooneys chasing rainbows rather than riches?
While the rest of the world counts its pennies, football
continues to roll around on a bed of £50 notes. Multi-million
pound transfers, giant signing fees, six-figure wages (a week,
that is). Credit crunch? Not in footballer-belt, where the
tills continue to ring up sales of mansions and Bentleys.

Perhaps it is for the riches, perhaps it is out of pure love
for the game that millions of small boys up and down the
country strive to make the big time. At the Football
Association (FA), officials are concerned that the vaulting
ambitions of these youngsters – and their parents and coaches –
are undermining the process of development.

The world’s worst boxer has finally thrown in the towel after
256 defeats.

Peter Buckley, 39, has lost more fights than any other boxer
and says that his next, number 300, will be his last.

‘I’ve had my eye on the 300 mark for a while, and it’s a little
milestone I want to achieve, but I don’t want to fight on,’ he
said.
