Forty-five years after Kolkata was used as a staging point to stop the relentless Chinese onslaught in the North-East, the city will play host to People’s Liberation Army officers, here on a recce for the first ever war games between the military rivals.
A 12-member PLA training team was scheduled to arrive in Kolkata late Thursday night to discuss with Eastern Command the modalities of the army exercise.
This has significant geo-political implications because the Chinese and Indian armies have been locked in an eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation over a 3,000-km-long disputed border straddling the Himalayas.
