Fumitaka Yanagisawa of Japan’s Yamagata University displays ‘juhyo’ or ice trees, which have been getting smaller because of climate change, at Mt. Zao in Yamagata city. Mount Zao is whipped every year by wet winds from across the Sea of Japan forming layers of ice and snow that shine like crystals. But these days the natural phenomenon is growing rarer due to industrial pollution from China.
